Walking in and Walking Right Back Out of 'The Tree... →
You can use all kinds of numbers as barometers of a film’s life: box office receipts, total theaters, days in release. In the case of “The Tree of Life,” Terrence Malick’s epic vision of modern life in America, take those numbers (some 200 theaters, about $6 million domestically since May) and add walkouts — hundreds, going by Tweets, blog posts and other online reports… This...

“A Stone” - Okkervil River (Seattle, 6.18.11) So, yeah, I was really close. My ears are still ringing but it was entirely worth it. Here’s a brief clip I took from a quieter moment in the show.

Woody Allen’s ‘Midnight in Paris’ is His Biggest... →
Ever since it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, Woody Allen’s latest comedic look at relationships and cityscapes, Midnight in Paris, has been building buzz and making money. It was at Cannes that my fellow Reject Simon Gallagher saw the film and called it one of Allen’s best in years. On its opening weekend stateside, our weekly look at the box office reported that it had brought in a...

a bright wall in a dark room.: Blue Valentine... →
brightwalldarkroom: YOU AND ME by Chad P. Essentially, we’re hard-wired to root for love. We want relationships to work out, onscreen and off. We want to believe couples make it, because we want to make it, too. We want to meet cute. We want to fall, head over heels. We want to write songs and have…  My thoughts on Blue Valentine, now up at BWDR…

Dealing with your own parents as an adult (especially as a parent yourself) is basically impossible at some points. I think, sadly, I’m at one of those points. And to not have that support in your life when you really need it is just an awful, no-good feeling.

Tom Scharpling on His Hit Radio Program ‘The Best... →
I never miss this show, ever.  Even though it’s three hours long every week and I have no free time in my life.  I still find a way, somehow, to fit the podcast in over the course of the week (often while mowing the lawn).  The Best Show is simply worth it. The hilarious long-form call sketches between Tom and Jon are the best thing on the radio anywhere today.
