I watched The Freebie (2010) tonight, and rather enjoyed it. Writer/director/star Katie Aselton has definitely put together something interesting here, despite it’s awful title and misguided, wrong-headed advertising (as a comedy). In fact, had netflix not recommended it to me - and had I then not done further research on it and found that it’s nothing like what it’s poster makes it seem it will be - I never would have taken a chance on it. So now I’m telling you that you should maybe take a chance on it. Because you never will if you just see this:

But I promise it’s not that movie. Instead, it’s a mostly improvised (the actors worked from a mere six page outline provided by Aselton) and interesting look at a relationship that still has a lot of love in it, but has run almost entirely out of passion. And how the couple navigates that impasse.
Also, I’m a little in love with Katie Aselton now. She has a new film that just played Sundance. Hopefully they market it a bit better.
